The presidency was created with George W. in mind. George Washington that is! As a result, he ran for the presidency the first time around and won. In fact, he ran unopposed. Washington got all the electoral votes.
Four years later, he considered retirement. People on both ends of the spectrum convinced him to run again. They feared the country would fall apart without him Washington feared he'd die in office.
In 1792, Washington was re-elected. Once again, he ran unopposed and received all the electoral votes. He is the only candidate to gain all the electoral votes in an election. Only Washington and James Monroe would run unopposed. When 1796 rolled around, Washington stepped aside.
