Top 200 Albums of All Time: Weezer

Weezer: Weezer (1994)
Weezer’s debut is a masterpiece of 90s alt rock. Since its release, the album has grown in stature and is now considered one of the great albums of the decade. Rivers Cuomo’s playing on the album is unique for the period. At the time, he was one of the few not copying Eddie Van Halen or grunge.

Pinkerton: Weezer (1996)
Originally, Cuomo wanted to create some sort of space opera, but he scraped it for the painkiller induced Pinkerton. The Weezer front man had leg surgery and wrote the album under the influence. At the time, no one understood the album and it was a disappointment. Fifteen years later, no one understands the album and it is considered artistic genius!

“It's no longer acceptable in mixed company -- meaning bipartisan company -- to use the goddamn word 'climate.' They pay pseudo-scientists to pretend to be scientists to put out the message: ‘This climate thing, it’s nonsense. Man-made CO2 doesn’t trap heat. It may be volcanoes.’ Bullshit! ‘It may be sun spots.’ Bullshit! ‘It’s not getting warmer.’ Bullshit!

Greatest TV Episodes of All Time #31-40

31. MASH: Tuttle (1973): Hawkeye and Trapper invent a surgeon and eventually everyone believes the guy is real. Eventually, General Clayton wants to honor Captain Tuttle. Hawkeye solves the problem by killing Tuttle. The imaginary captain jumped out of a helicopter to help wounded soldiers, but forgot his parachute. Seinfeld used the same storyline for an episode 20 years later.

32. The Munsters: Herman the Rookie (1965): Leo Durocher discovers Herman playing ball with Eddie and gives him a tryout with the Dodgers. Herman destroys the baseball field and Leo has to let him go. Despite his amazing talent, repairs to the field would cost too much if Herman played professionally.

33. Star Trek: Balance of Terror (1966): Kirk and crew encounter Romulans and engage in a deadly cat and mouse game based on films such as Run Silent, Run Deep with the Enterprise serving as a surface ship and the Romulans as a submarine.

34. MTV Unplugged: Nirvana (1993): Nirvana appeared on MTV Unplugged in late 1993. They played a lot of covers and lesser known songs. The stage was decorated with lilies and candles as Cobain wanted it to look like a funeral. He died in April, 1994 and the CD was the band’s first release after his death.

Joanie wants to beat the captain of the cheerleading squad who had her cut from the team. Fonzie’s bike breaks down and he has to walk it 12 miles and is exhausted. He collapses, but comes to when threatened with a crew cut. Fonzie breaks into a Russian jig and wins the contest. This scene is later used in a Weezer video.

Songs of the Year 2009

Here is my list of songs of the year. I tried to go with a variety of genres as opposed to whatever I liked…

Check My Brain- Alice in Chains: It’s 1995 again. The 90s are making a major comeback. We seem to have jump skipped right over the 80s and right to the flannel.

East Jesus Nowhere- Green Day: If you are religious, this is not for you. Green Day goes off on organized religion and sings “of blasphemy and genocide.”

I Got a Feeling- Black Eyed Peas: They had quite a year. This song touched a chord. The basic premise is everyone is stressed, so let’s spend all our money and drink.

(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To- Weezer: Classic Weezer.

Mean Old Man- Jerry Lee Lewis: Jerry Lee covers Kris Kristofferson and still sounds good.

No Rest for the Wicked- Cage the Elephant: Everyone has heard this one even if they don’t know it. It’s appeared in a few commercials. Interesting that a bunch of white guys around 20 are the ones doing the Mississippi Delta thing.

Oh Yeah- Chickenfoot: Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith bring back 80s hard rock. Since they are the only ones doing it, they had a hit record.

Outlaw Pete- Bruce Springsteen: Bruce channels old school cowboy tales into an 8 minute epic.

That’s Not My Name- The Ting Tings: This reminds me of “Mickey” from the early 80s. Who hasn’t forgotten a girl’s name the morning after?

Uprising- Muse: Muse brings back the synthesizer and sings about rebellion. This should be the Tea Party Movement’s anthem. It’s a mishmash of everything that has come before and gets played as bumper music on every sporting event out there.

#97: Weezer

Weezer broke into the mainstream with 1994’s “Sweater Song.” They followed that up with the iconic video “Buddy Holly.” Buddy Holly is an interesting song. It ties Weezer to Buddy Holly who was the original geek rocker. Weezer has since taken the mantle with a series of successful albums and videos. Despite being the kings of nerd rock, they also tread on areas even metal and rap bands fear to tread. No, not the Muppet Show, but their songs “Hashpipe” and “Dopenose” have a harder darker edge than most acts in the darker genres. That gives them credibility. They do music for art's sake as opposed to doing it for shock value.

Rock Star Moment: The video for “Beverly Hills” was filmed at the Playboy Mansion.

Essential Weezer: The Blue Album (1994), Pinkerton (1996), The Green Album (2001)

Weezer’s Top 10:
Undone- The Sweater Song
Buddy Holly
Hash Pipe
Island in the Sun
Pork and Beans
Beverly Hills
Say It Ain’t So
El Scorcho
We Are All On Drugs
Perfect Situation
