Top 200 Albums of All Time: "E"

Here are the artists starting with "E"

Eagles: The Eagles (1972)

The Eagles debuted put the country back into rock music. Despite the laid back nature, the band was driven. They eventually became one of the most influential acts in history. On a side note, the album was supposed to be Quadraphonic, but was never released as such.

Key Tracks:

Take It Easy
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Witchy Woman

Hotel California: The Eagles (1976)

Pete Townsend compared the seventies to Sodom and Gomorrah. Hotel California investigates the excesses within American life. It appeared America had descended into materialism and decadence in the years following the Vietnam War. It is a window into the “Fall of Rome.”

Key Tracks:

Hotel California
Life In The Fast Lane
New Kid In Town
Victim of Love

The Marshall Mathers LP: Eminem (2000)

Hip Hop appeared to be on the decline until Eminem. It had devolved into plastic pop music much in the same way rock music did a decade earlier. Eminem gave the genre back its edge. The Slim Shady LP put Detroit’s Eminem on the map, but The Marshall Mathers LP made him a superstar. On this album, Eminem is more introspective. Marshall is viewed without Slim Shady.

Key Tracks:
Stan
The Way I Am
The Real Slim Shady

#20 The Eagles

The Eagles derived their name from the Folk Rock band, The Byrds. They combined country with rock music and became one of the most successful bands in history. During the 1970s, they had five #1 songs and have five #1 albums for their entire career. Their greatest hits album is the best selling album in US history. By the end of the 1970s, they moved away from country and group tensions eventually broke them up in 1980. In 1994, Hell froze over and the band reunited. In 1998, they made the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Nine years later, they released their first album of new material since 1979. They are now back together, continue to tour, and scoring #1 albums once more.

Rock n Roll Moment: Don Henley was arrested when a 16 year old girl OD’d at his house. She survived and he was charged with drug possession and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

#49 The Byrds

The Byrds combined the best of Dylan with the best of the Beatles to create folk rock. Their trademark songs are folk covers rocked up. They include: Mr Tambourine Man, My Back Pages, and Turn!Turn!Turn!. They also delved into the psychedelic (who didn’t in the 60s?) The band performed at Monterey in 1967 and tensions began to develop. After a lineup change, they went country. They were the first 60s rock band to do so. Tensions broke the band apart in the early 1970s and they have occasionally regrouped through the decades.

Rock n Roll Moment: They took Dylan and added the Beatles to create a new sound.

Essential Byrds:

Mr. Tambourine Man (1965)
Turn!Turn!Turn! (1965)
Sweetheart of the Rodeo (1968)
