"Our Western partners headed by the United States prefer not to be guided by international law in their practical policies, but by the rule of the gun. "So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when (Sterling’s) racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. "Drug addicts and alcoholics are always, 'The world is a harsh place.' My mother was in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany. I don't want to hear f**k all about "the world as a harsh place." She gets up every day, smells the roses and loves life. And for a putz, 20-year-old kid to say, 'I'm depressed, I live in Seattle.' F**k you, then kill yourself."

-Gene Simmons

"We do stories on food stamps, but only to the extent that we prove the cast that they’re needed, without also examining well-established fraud and abuse. We look at unemployment but only to the extent that we present sympathetic characters showing that benefits should be extended rather than examining, also, the escalating cost and instances of fraud. We cover minimum wage but only to the extent that we help make the case for raising it, without giving much due to the other side, which argued it will have the opposite effect than intended."

-James Spader on Ultron

"God, I’m going to sound like a grumpy old man. Modern music, to me, is very formulaic."

that."

-Rush Limbaugh

"If I'm dead do I still have to pay taxes?

-Axl Rose on rumors of his death

Top 200 Albums of All Time: "N" artists

Nevermind: Nirvana (1991)
Few albums had the type of impact that Nevermind experienced. Nirvana shocked the music world when the album unseated Michael Jackson atop the music charts. Nevermind brought alternative music to the mainstream and wiped out the music scene of the time. Grunge took over for a few years before burning out. Rolling Stone summed it up best, "No album in recent history had such an overpowering impact on a generation—a nation of teens suddenly turned punk—and such a catastrophic effect on its main creator."

Key Tracks:

Smells Like Teen Spirit
Come As You Are
Lithium
In Bloom

In Utero: Nirvana (1993)

Nirvana tried to move away from their sound in Nevermind. As a result, they created a grittier, dirtier, rawer record. Perhaps nothing demonstrates the difference between the two albums than their covers. Nevermind featured a baby. In Utero featured an angel with its musculature exposed.

Key Tracks:

Heart-Shaped Box
Rape Me
Pennyroyal Tea

MTV Unplugged in New York: Nirvana (1994)

Nirvana released Unplugged in New York nearly seven months following Kurt Cobain’s suicide. The album demonstrated the band’s range as they moved away from so-called Grunge music. Additionally, it appeared as though Cobain was acting as though the record and accompanying video were a farewell.

Key Tracks:

About a Girl
The Man Who Sold the World
Lake of Fire
All Apologies
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

Ready to Die: Notorious B.I.G. (1994)

Biggie’s semi-autobiographical album focuses on his days as a criminal.

Key Tracks:

Juicy
Big Poppa
One More Chance

Straight Outta Compton: NWA (1988)

NWA changed the direction of rap and hip-hop. The lyrics spoke of the gangsta lifestyle and influenced the genre for a number of years afterward. It was a dramatic departure for the musical style, which boasted MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice.

Key Tracks:
Straight Outta Compton
Gangsta Gangsta
Express Yourself
Fuck tha Police

A Modern Dante's Inferno

In the fourteenth century, Dante created some of our conceptions about Hell. In the poem, Dante is escorted through Hell by the Roman poet Virgil. Dante's Hell has multiple levels and punishments are leveled upon sinners based on their crimes. This is not a one size fits all hell.

The Inferno has nine circles. Each circle represents a different sin and Dante placed real historical figures into these categories. Modern readers will not know most of these characters. So, here is an updated version...
First Circle: Limbo (Unbaptised and Virtuous Pagans)

Gandhi: The Indian mahatma led his country's independence movement through non-violent civil disobedience. However, he was not a Christian. As a result, he lands in Dante's first circle.

Second Circle: Lust

Wilt Chamberlain: Wilt claimed to have bedded over 20,000 women.

Third Circle: Gluttony

Jim Morrison: Jim did everything to excess and eventually ballooned out.

Fourth Circle: Avarice (Greed)

Ken Lay: The former Enron chief destroyed his company and wiped out his workers. Before the trial, Lay was worth around $40 million.

Fifth Circle: Wrath

Bernhard Goetz (space waiting): Yeah, he's still alive, but Goetz is the poster child for vigilantism.

Sixth Circle: Heresy

Joseph Smith: He convinced his followers that an angel visited him. He compiled the Book of Mormon and created his own branch of Christianity.
Seventh Circle: Violence

Toward Others: Ike Turner: Ike was a well known wife-beater.

Toward Self (Suicide): Kurt Cobain: Cobain shot himself at the peak of his popularity.

Toward God (Blasphemy): Muhammad Atta: Pick your terrorist for believing that killing people for Islam will get them 72 virgins and make God happy.

Toward Nature (Sodomy): Gerry Studds: Congressman Studds got involved with underage male pages.

Toward Art (Usury): JP Morgan: Is anyone a better example of Usury?

Eighth Circle: Fraud

Seducers: Marquis de Sade: The Maquis lived a scandalous life based on sexual liberty.

Flatterers: Joseph Goebbels: Goebbels served as Hitler's propaganda minister.

Simony: Reserved for George Soros: Simony is the sin of paying for church sacraments and offices. A modern equivalent might be the purchase of political influence. Soros has bought one of America's major political parties.

False Prophets: Jim Jones: Jones portrayed himself as a holy man and killed his followers.

Barraters: Boss Tweed: Tweed was the most corrupt politician in U.S. history.

Hypocrites: Jimmy Swaggert: 'nuf said.

Thieves: Jesse James: Jesse James was the most famous of the Old West outlaws.

False Counselors: Johnny Cochrane: Pick your lawyer...Cochrane got O.J. off for murder.

Schismatics: George Wallace: Few politicians have sewed as much discord as George Wallace.

Falsifiers: Alger Hiss: Hiss was a traitor, Soviet agent, and perjurer.

Ninth Circle: Betrayal

Kin: Lizzy Borden: There may be no greater betrayal than murdering one's family.

Country: Benedict Arnold: Arnold is America's greatest traitor. He almost succeeded in surrendering West Point to the British.

Guests: Ayatollah Khomeini: Iran held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days from 1979-1981. The American embassy workers were guests in Iran and Khomeini betrayed them.

Benefactors: Mary Queen of Scots: Mary became embroiled in a plot of overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I. Mary lived under Elizabeth's protection and betrayed her cousin.

#35 Neil Young

Neil Young is the ultimate singer-songwriter. He’s got the most unique voice to go along with his distinctive guitar style and deeply personal lyrics. Young broke in the 1960s and has remained the folk hippy curmudgeon. His music ranges from acoustic to electric; from swing to rockabilly; and from jazz to grunge.

Young was a member of the super group Buffalo Springfield. “For What It’s Worth” is one of the defining songs of the 60s. The band quickly fell apart as a result of tensions between members and with their management. Young moved onto a solo career and immediately recorded “Cinnamon Girl” and “Down by the River.” Then, he joined Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The highpoint of CSNY was “Ohio” about the Kent State Massacre in 1970.

Outside CSNY, Young recorded classics such as “Southern Man” and “The Needle and the Damage Done.” Young’s biggest hit (and only #1) was “Heart of Gold.” He quickly moved to the “Ditch Trilogy” before returning to spotlight in the mid-70s. His last great 70s song, “Hey Hey My My” would have been a grunge classic had it come out in 1992.

In the 80s, Young experimented with his music. After some time off the beaten path, 1988 brought Young back. He lampooned Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson for selling out in “This Note’s For You.” The next year, “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” provided a transition between 1980s and 1990s music. The song had the big 80s sound with early 1990s social consciousness. The feedback used on his Freedom album hearkened back to the 1970s and served as a precursor to the 1990s.

Neil Young was dubbed “The Godfather of Grunge” in the early 90s as Pearl Jam and Nirvana borrowed from his work. In fact, Kurt Cobain’s suicide note quoted Neil Young. At the same time, Young went folk with his Harvest Moon album. He continued to tour and record into the 2000s. In 2006, he stirred controversy with an anti-Bush album, Living With War.

Young has always been an activist. He protested Vietnam, co-founded Farm Aid, campaigns for the environment, and also directs films. He continues to tour and record.

Rock n Roll Moment: Neil Young performed anti-war songs during the Iraq War which resulted in his audience walking out on him. This did not dissuade him from continuing at the next show.

Essential Neil Young:

Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere (1969)
After the Gold Rush (1970)
Harvest (1972)
On The Beach (1974)
Tonight’s The Night (1975)
Rust Never Sleeps (1979)
Freedom (1989)
Prairie Wind (2005)

Neil Young’s Top 10:

Heart of Gold
Hey Hey My My

Four Strong Winds

#42 Nirvana

It’s hard to believe that Nirvana’s recording career lasted only 5 years. They released their debut, “Bleach” in 1989 and their final album, “Unplugged in New York”, came out in 1994. However, their impact was huge. Nirvana is considered the flagship band of Generation X. They just happened along at the right time. People were tired of the old 80s scene and were moving toward Hip Hop and Country. Then, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” came out and that spelled the end of the plastic 80s. Their album, “Nevermind” beat out Michael Jackson on the pop charts and quickly became the most important album in years. The band was not sure if they liked being successful and it took it’s toll on front man Kurt Cobain. In 1994, he committed suicide.

Rock n Roll Moment: Smells Like Teen Spirit launched the 90s Rock Revolution.

Essential Nirvana:

Bleach (1989)
Nevermind (1991)
In Uetero (1993)
Unplugged (1994)

Nirvana’s Top 10:
