...and one from the Old Senators....

Senators: 4 Giants: 3 (12 innings) 1924 World Series Game 7: Walter Johnson atones for stinking it up earlier in the series and Bucky Harris’ bad hop single wins the future Minnesota Twins first World Series. The Senators never won another series. The franchise won its next title in 1987.

Twins: 6 Yankees: 0 (April 11, 1961): Twins win first game since move from Washington beating the mighty Yankees and Whitey Ford. Ford went 25-4 that season.

Minnesota: 2 Washington: 1 (September 26, 1965): Jim Kaat beats Senators 2-1 to win pennant. Ironically, the Twins used to play in Washington.

1977: Rod Carew makes a run at .400 and finishes at .388.

Twins: 9 Tigers: 5 (1987 ALCS Game Five): Twins win first pennant since 1965.

Twins: 4 Cardinals: 2 (1987 World Series Game Seven): The Twins win a thrilling Fall Classic in seven games. Frank Viola goes 8 for the win and is the series MVP. It is the franchise's first title since 1924.

Twins: 4 Braves: 3 (11 Innings) 1991 World Series Game 6: The Puckett Game: Hall of Famer Kirby Pucket demonstrated how a single player can take over a game. He made an amazing catch and hit a game winning walk off forcing Game 7 vs. Atlanta.

Twins: 1 Braves: 0 (1991 World Series Game 7): The Jack Morris Game:  Jack Morris pitched 10  shutout innings vs.the Braves. Before the game, most people put their money on John Smoltz. However, those that watched Morris' career and knew the game understood that the Twins held the advantage. The Twins win 1-0 in 10 innings. Morris is the MVP.

2006: Joe Mauer became the first catcher to lead the AL in hitting. Two national league catchers have won batting titles. Bubbles Hargrave in 1926 and Ernie Lombardi in 1938 and 1942. To date, he is the only  catcher with three batting championships.

Twins: 6 Tigers: 5 (12 innings) October 6, 2009: The Twins come back from 3 down with 4 to play to win the Central. In the one game playoff, they beat Detroit in an exciting 12 inning contest. The Tigers led by a run in the 10th and the Twins tied it. In the 12th, Detroit loaded the bases, but failed to score. Brandon Inge was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but the umpire ignored this. The Twins scored in the 12th and moved on to the ALDS.

Greatest Detroit Sports Moment #4: Magglio's Walkoff (2006)

The Tigers returned to the World Series for the first time in 22 years after sweeping the A's. After falling behind in Game Four of the ALCS, Magglio Ordonez took over with 2 home runs. The second sent Detroit to the Fall Classic. Just a side note, I was in the stands for the home run. It was the greatest Sports moment I witnessed live.

Greatest Games of the 80s #11-20

11. Tigers: 1 Royals: 0 (October 5, 1984): The nail biter. Happy Birthday to me! The Tigers win Game 3 of the ALCS and the Pennant. Milt Wilcox is unhittable scattering 3 hits. Willie Hernandez finished up and Darrell Evans beat Willie Wilson in a foot race. No Buckner moment here!

12. The 1989 Rose Bowl- Wolverines: 22 Trojans: 14 (January 2, 1989): Bo goes bowling. USC led 14-3 at the half behind Rodney Pete. Michigan’s running game and defense took over in the second half and Leroy Hoard was the MVP. It was Bo’s last bowl win and UM finished #4 in the country with only close losses to Miami and Notre Dame.

13. 32nd Annual NHL All-Star Game- Wales: 6 Campbell: 3 (February 5, 1980) : Howe Returns. Gordie Howe returns to Detroit for the All-Star Game. Unfortunately, it’s at the Joe and not the Olympia.

14. Celtics: 108 Pistons: 107 (May 26, 1987): Bird steals the ball. The Pistons looked to win at Boston Garden for the first time since the Caesars ruled Rome. A win gave Detroit a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals against Boston with a chance to close out the Celts at home. Then, Bird steals the ball. It was the same game Robert Parrish cheap-shotted Bill Laimbeer.

15. Tigers: 7 Twins: 6 (October 10, 1987): Disaster delayed. The Tigers looked doomed after dropping the first two of the ALCS to Minnesota. Pat Sheridan’s 2-run 8th inning shot off Jeff Reardon launched the comeback that never was.

16. Tigers: 6 Blue Jays: 3 (10 innings) (June 4, 1984): The Bergman Experience. Dave Bergman spent seven minutes batting against Roy Lee Jackson. He fouled off 7 pitches after working a full count. Then, he hit a 3-run shot to win the game and launch ABC Monday Night Baseball’s new season.

17. Pistons: 186 Nuggets: 184 (December 13, 1983): The highest scoring game in NBA history. Nowadays, 105 points is a lot. Back then, teams could score. Four players scored 40 or more (Kiki Vandewegh-51, Alex English-47, Isiah- 47, and John Long-41). Twelve players landed in double figures. Imagine scoring 184 and losing…

18. Tigers: 6 White Sox: 0 (April 15, 1983): Damn you Jerry Hairston! Milt Wilcox had a perfect game going into the 9th. Jerry Hairston singles with 2 outs in the 9th to spoil Wilcox’s perfecto.

19. Knicks: 127 Pistons: 123 (OT) (April 27, 1984): Isiah goes off. Game 5 of the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Isiah was having a poor game and then scored 16 points in the last 94 seconds to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately, the Knicks won the game and the series.

20. Tigers: 3 Blue Jays: 2 (September 27, 1987): The Comeback begins. The Tigers went into Toronto and lost the first three games of the series. They trailed 2-1 in the 9th when Kirk Gibson homered off Tom Henke to tie the game. The Tigers won in 13 innings and went 5-2 down the stretch. It sent Toronto into one of the great tailspins in history. They did not win again. The Tigers gained 5 games in the last week and won the division by 2 games.

Top 10 LCS Moments

The League Championship Series began in 1969. These are my Top 10 moments. So, nothing from 1969...
1. George Brett‘s homer off Goose Gossage: Game 3 (October 19, 1980): Kansas City could not beat the Yankees and lost several playoff series to the Yanks. Brett’s 3 run shot off the Goose finished off a sweep and sent KC to the World Series.

2. Milt Wilcox wins the “nail biter”: Game 3 (October 5, 1984): Wilcox and Willie Hernandez combine on a 3 hitter and the Tigers win the pennant 1-0. The most amazing play occurred when Darrell Evans beat Willie Wilson to first. It was the anti-Buckner play.

3. Steve Garvey breaks the Cubs: Game 4 (October 6, 1984): The Cubs were going to their first World Series since 1945. Oh no they aren’t. The Cubs would lose Game 5 and San Diego would lose to Detroit.

4. The Henderson Home Run: Game 5 (October 12, 1986): The Angels were one strike away from their first World Series. Dave Henderson homered to ruin that. California tied it in the bottom of the 9th. The Red Sox won it in the 11th. The Angels collapse had begun.

5. Mets and Astros play greatest LCS game ever: Game 6 (October 15, 1986): It went 16 innings. The Mets led in the 14th and Billy Hatcher tied it with a home run. The Mets scored 3 in the 16th. The Astros scored 2.

6. Cabrera’s Game Winner: Game 7 (October 14, 1992): Pirates lead 2-0 in the 9th. Braves score 3. Sid Bream was not a fast man…and he rumbled and stumbled into score the series winner.

7. Schilling spits at Braves: 1993: The Phils would not be intimidated. Schilling would dominate the Braves and Philadelphia went to the World Series.

8. The Grand Slam Single: Game 5 (October 17, 1999): Braves led the Mets 3-2 in the 15th. Robin Ventura hit a Grand Slam to win the game, but was mobbed before he could get to second. Luckily, two runs scored before he was called out.

9. Red Sox come back from 3-0: 2004: This was quite a series. David Ortiz with several big hits and Schilling’s bloody sock. Never thought anyone would ever come back from a 3-0 deficit.

10. Maggs Pennant winner: Game 4 (October 14, 2006): Tigers trailed the whole game. Maggs hit a home run earlier in the game. It was tied 3-3 in the 9th. Maggs then hit a walk off pennant winner. Detroit’s greatest baseball moment since Gibson’s home run in the 1984 World Series.

Greatest League Division Series Moments

The League Division Series has existed from 1995-The Present. There was also NL and AL Division Series’ following the Strike-Shortened 1981 season.

Tony Pena HR in 13th: Game 1 (October 3, 1995): Tony Pena’s home run off Zane Smith in the 13th gave the Tribe a 5-4 win. It was one of the first real dramatic LDS moments.
On another note, Boston won Game 5 of the 1986 World Series and did not win another Post Season game until Game 1 of the 1998 ALDS. The streak hit 11 games.

Griffey’s mad dash: Game 5 (October 8, 1995): The greatest LDS ever was in 1995. The Yanks held a 2-0 series lead and blew it. In Game 5, they held a 4-2 lead in the 8th. The Mariners tied it. In the bottom of the 11th, Edgar Martinez doubled in Ken Griffey Jr and the M’s went wild. Randy Johnson came into the game in the 9th and got the win.

Pedro pitches in relief: Game 5 (October 11, 1999): Boston had not won a playoff series since 1986. After three innings, the Tribe led 8-7. Pedro Martinez came into the game in the 4th inning and finished the game out. The Red Sox won 12-8.

Jeter’s throw: Game 3 (October 13, 2001): The A’s beat the Yanks in the first two games of the ALDS. The Yankees led 1-0 into the bottom of the 7th. With 2 out, Jason Giambi singled. Torrence Long doubled to right. Shane Spencer missed the cutoff man. Jeter noticed and swiftly reacted. He ran down the line, grabbed the ball 20 feet from home, and whirled home. He had no time to set. Giambi was out. The Yankees won 1-0 and they would win the series in five.

Pudge holds the ball: Game 4 (October 4, 2003): The Marlins led the Giants 2-1 in the NLDS and 7-5 in the 9th of Game 4. The Giants rallied for one and the tying run, J.T. Snow, was thrown out at home. Catcher Ivan Rodriguez held onto the ball for the win.

Ortiz 10th inning HR ends series: (October 8, 2004): Boston has Anaheim’s number. Leading two games to none in the ‘04 LDS, the Sox were tied with Anaheim in the 10th. David Ortiz hit a 2 run shot to win the game and the series.

Chris Burke hits HR in 18th: Game 4 (October 9, 2005): The Braves and Astros went 18 innings. Chris Burke hit a walk-off home run and won the series…in the 18th inning.

Clemens comes in to pitch in relief: Game 4 (October 9, 2005): In the aforementioned 18 inning contest, Roger Clemens came into pitch in the 16th inning. He was the Astros last available pitcher and got the win.

Kenny Rogers handcuffs Yanks: Game 3 (October 6, 2006): Kenny Rogers was a terrible postseason pitcher. That changed in 2006 when he became the first pitcher since Christy Mathewson in 1905 to have three scoreless postseason starts. This was the first of those three starts.

Bondo has perfecto through 5: Tigers beat Yanks: Game 4 (October 7, 2006): The Yankees were hitless until the 6th inning. Bonderman went 8 1/3 for the win and the Tigers wiped the Yankees out of the postseason.

Top 10 Tiger Games I attended

In Chronological Order:

1. Detroit: 7 Chisox: 2 (August 8, 1983): First game I remember attending. Larry Herndon homered; Jack Morris beat Jerry Koosman. It was the second game of a DH.

2. Detroit: 8 Twins: 0 (July 14, 1985): Walt Terrell had a no hitter into the 7th. Tom Brunansky broke it up with a double with 2 outs. Herndon, Darrell Evans, and Alan Trammell homered. Terrell beat Frank Viola.

3. Tigers: 4 Blue Jays: 2 (October 2, 1985): Toronto had not clinched the division yet. Morris beat Dave Steib. Darrell Evans hit his 40th homer of the season and Kirk Gibson followed that with an inside the park homer.

4. Tigers: 7 Twins: 6 (October 10, 1987): ALCS Game 3. Tigers are down 2 games to none in the series and down 6-5 in the 8th of Game 3. Jeff Reardon (The Terminator) is pitching. Pat Sheridan hits a 2 run shot. Mike Henneman retires the Twins in the 9th. Tigers are back in the series for 24 hours.

5. Tigers: 3 Boston 1 (Game 1); Tigers: 3 Boston: 2 (Game 2) (August 5, 1988): The longest doubleheader ever. It had several rain delays and I got home at 5 am. Darrell Evans hit the only Tiger homer of the twinbill. I went to the final game of the series that Sunday (8-7-88) as well. Bruce Hurst pitched a 10 inning shutout for Boston and Detroit lost 3-0. Tiger starter Jeff Robinson also pitched into the 10th. When was the last time 2 starters pitched into extras?

6. White Sox: 11 Detroit: 8 (12) and Tigers: 4 Sox: 2 (April 13, 1997): COLDEST GAME EVER!!! I bought pizza to use as a leg warmer. This was colder than the 2006 World Series. I only remember Chris Snopek hitting a big home run and Vince Coleman getting picked off right before Travis Fryman went deep.

7. Boston: 7 Tigers: 4 (August 7, 2004): Pedro struck out 11 and was dominant. Francona pulled him with a 7-2 lead (1 Tiger run was unearned) and Detroit scored off the Sox pen.

8. Detroit: 11 Royals: 2 (April 4, 2005): Dmitry Young hit 3 homers on Opening Day. Notorious Brandon Inge also homered. Bonderman fanned 7 in the win.

9. Tigers: 6 A's: 3 (October 14, 2006): Game 4 of the ALCS. Tigers fall behind 3-0, come back to tie, and then Maggs hits his second homer of the game...a 3 run walk off Pennant Winner. Tigers are going to the Series! They ran around the field, Polanco was wrapped like a mummy, and Kenny Rogers sprayed the crowd with champagne.

10. Tigers: 8 Yankees: 3 (October 7, 2006): Game 4 of the ALDS. Jeremy Bonderman has a perfecto going until he who shall remain nameless opened his mouth...Robinson Cano got a hit leading off the 6th. Tigers win the game and the series anyways. This came after Kenny Rogers amazing start in Game 3. Craig Monroe and Magglio Ordonez homered.

Greatest World Series

The Ultimate World Series...game by game.

Game 1: Dodgers: 5 A's: 4 (1988): The Dodgers scored 2 in the first, but that was wiped out by a Jose Canseco Grand Slam in the second. The A's held a 4-3 lead in the 9th and turned to Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley to close it out. With 2 out, Mike Davis (.196 batter for the year) drew a pinch hit walk and stole second. Kirk Gibson came to bat unable to walk. He hit a game winning walk off 2 run shot. The Dodgers beat the mighty A's in 5 games.

Game 2: White Sox: 7 Astros: 6 (2005): This was a wild game. The Sox held a 6-4 lead in the 9th. Houston tied it. In the bottom of the 9th, Scott Podsednik (0 homers) hit a walk off homer.

Game 3: Mets: 5 Orioles: 0 (1969): Tommy Agee took control of this game. He led off with a homer off Hall of Famer Jim Palmer. He also made two outstanding catches saving the five runs and the game for the Mets (and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan).

Game 4: Yankees: 7 Dodgers: 4 (1941): The Yankees were trailing Brooklyn 4-3 in the ninth. With 2 out and no one on, Tommy Hendrich struck out, but the ball got by the catcher. Mickey Owen's error opened the floodgates. New York scored 4 runs with 2 outs to take a 3-1 series lead.

Game 5: Yankees: 2 Dodgers: 0 (1956): Don Larsen's Perfect Game.

Game 6: Red Sox: 7 Reds: 6 (12 innings) (1975): This game had everything. It was tied 3-3 after 6. The Reds led by 3 in the bottom of the 8th when Bernie Carbo hit a pinch homer to tie the game at 6. Dwight Evans doubled off a runner at first from right field. Oh yeah, Carlton Fisk hit a homer...Sox win.

Game 7: Twins: 1 Braves: 0 (1991): Lonnie Smith stumbled rounding the bases. That was Atlanta's only chance to score. John Smoltz pitched 7 scoreless innings. Jack Morris pitched 10.

Game 8: Red Sox: 3 Giants: 2 (10 innings) (1912): An eight game series?? 1912 featured the Red Sox and their 105 wins and the Giants and their 103 wins. The series went beyond the distance.
Game 2 ended in a 6-6 tie. The two teams battled to an eighth game. It was 1-1 after 9. New York scored in the 10th to take a 2-1 lead. Boston scored 2 in the bottom half to win the series. Christy Mathewson went the distance for the Giants.

Greatest Baseball LCS Games Ever

Game 1: Phillies: 4 Braves: 3 (1993): Curt Schilling struck out the first five Braves he faced and 10 overall in 8 innings. The Phillies led going into the 9th, but Atlanta tied it. Kim Batiste doubled in John Kruk in the 10th for the win.

Game 2: White Sox: 2 Angels: 1 (2005): The AJ strikeout play game. AJ strikes out. Josh Paul throws the ball back to the mound. AJ runs to first and is safe. Sox score. Sox win. It gave the Sox the momentum for the rest of the series.

Game 3: Detroit: 1 Kansas City: 0 (1984): Milt Wilcox pitched the game of his career. Willie Hernandez finished it off. Darrell Evans won a footrace with Willie Wilson. Tigers win their first pennant since 1968.

Game 4: Boston: 6 New York: 4 (2004): Yanks were looking to sweep. Boston rallied to tie the game off Mo Rivera in the 9th. In the 12th, David Ortiz homered and the Sox would not lose again.

Game 5: Boston: 7 California: 6 (1986): The Sox were down to their final strike. California and Gene Mauch were onto their first ever World Series. Then, something funny happened on the way to the champagne. Dave Henderson hit a 2 strike homerun to give Boston a 6-5 lead. California would tie it in the bottom half of the 9th. Hendu would win the game on a sac fly in the 11th. The Red Sox would go to the series.

Game 6: Mets: 7 Astros: 6 (1986): Perhaps the greatest game ever. Houston led 3-0 in the 9th. If the Mets lost, they would have to face Mike Scott in Game 7. They tied the game in the 9th. In the 14th, they took the lead, but Billy Hatcher tied it with a homerun. In the 16th, the Mets scored 3 and the Astros scored 2 before Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass on a 3-2 count. Prior to the strikeout, Keith Hernandez told Orosco that if he threw a fastball to Bass, Orosco would die.

Game 7: Atlanta: 3 Pittsburgh: 2 (1992)
Pittsburgh led 2-0 in the 9th. Atlanta had cut the lead to 1. With two out, Francisco (10 at bats) Cabrera hit a pinch hit single to score the tying run and then after what seemed like a year, Sid Bream to win the pennant.
