History Shorts: Clovis becomes king (491)

Clovis became the first king to unite all the Franks. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, he adopted Christianity leading to an alliance with the church. The Vatican had been looking for western allies due to poor relations with Constantinople. Second, Clovis’ line eventually led to Charlemagne’s rule three centuries later. Charlemagne was the most important man of the early Middle Ages.
