Sci Fi History: Lost in Space (1965)

The Robinson family was to colonize deep space aboard their ship the Jupiter 2. However, Dr. Zachary Smith sabotaged the ship for some reason throwing the family off course. Smith became trapped with the family as they ventured through 83 episodes. Smith was originally supposed to be written off the show, but later became the focus of conflict and comic relief.  His actions often put the family in danger and his relationship between the young Will Robinson and the Robot anchored Lost in Space. The show was later cancelled due to escalating costs and faltering ratings. Lost in Space remains an important part of pop culture and sci-fi history despite its campiness. A reboot was proposed in 2003, but not picked up. The reimaged Battlestar Galactica bought the sets.
