Sci-Fi History: Star Trek (1966)

The network panned the original Star Trek pilot, but commissioned a second. By this point, Jeffrey Hunter bowed out and was replaced by William Shatner. In fact, only Leonard Nimoy returned from the original pilot. The new pilot was more action packed and was picked up. The Original Series lasted three seasons and recounted the adventures of the Starship Enterprise. The show tackled many topics other shows avoided. The episodes made it past the censors because they took place in outer space. Star Trek dealt with not only science fiction topics such as eugenics, but the Vietnam War, Cold War, racism, and other hot button issues. The show was cancelled after three years, but revived in reruns leading to a successful film franchise and several spin off TV shows.

Sci Fi History: Lost in Space (1965)

The Robinson family was to colonize deep space aboard their ship the Jupiter 2. However, Dr. Zachary Smith sabotaged the ship for some reason throwing the family off course. Smith became trapped with the family as they ventured through 83 episodes. Smith was originally supposed to be written off the show, but later became the focus of conflict and comic relief.  His actions often put the family in danger and his relationship between the young Will Robinson and the Robot anchored Lost in Space. The show was later cancelled due to escalating costs and faltering ratings. Lost in Space remains an important part of pop culture and sci-fi history despite its campiness. A reboot was proposed in 2003, but not picked up. The reimaged Battlestar Galactica bought the sets.

Quotes of the Month: January 2014

Quote of the Month: “I'm the best corner in the game! When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that's the result you're going to get. Don't you ever talk about me. Don't you open your mouth about the best, or I'll shut it for you real quick."

-Richard Sherman

Stupid Quote of the Month: "Do you understand what he did in this country? No, no, no, you tell me, you tell me. Why is he held captive here in this country, why?"

-Dennis Rodman exploding when asked about a Korean-American held captive in North Korea.

“Political ignorance helps explain Americans’ perpetual disappointment with politicians generally, and presidents especially, to whom voters unrealistically attribute abilities to control events. The elections of 1932 and 1980 dramatically illustrated how voters primarily control politicians — by ‘retrospective voting,’ refusing to reelect them.”

-George Will

“Do you know what the Geneva agreement means? It means the surrender of the big powers before the great Iranian nation."

-Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the nuclear deal

“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president. Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black president.”

-Barack Obama

“Nobody messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out! #disni—a."

-Madonna

"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are hopeless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them with their prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it.”

-Mike Huckabee

"He took advantage of a girl that was 20 years old and an intern in his office. There is no excuse for that, and that is predatory behavior. Someone who takes advantage of a young girl in their office? I mean, really. And then they have the gall to stand up and say, 'Republicans are having a war on women?'"

-Rand Paul

“[President Obama has] given up on being the great uniter – the charismatic president who would bring America together. And now he’s simply trying to hang on for quite small achievements, which I think, in his own eyes, means that he’s a failure.”

– Charles Krauthammer
